Nexus 7 and Samsung Galaxy S call smartphone tablet battle

For all the growth in the smartphone market over the past three years, only two companies are currently generating any kind of meaningful profit from the device.  APPLE is the leader, keeping 73% of all handset industry profit in the first quarter of this year.  Samsung is the other, generated 26% of all handset industry profit during the same quarter.

Samsung builds phone and tablets running on Google's Android operating system which faces a host of challenges.  In addition to the myriad companies offering competing Android devices, including Motorola Mobility which was purchased by Google recently, a slew of Windows-based phones.

Google Inc is launching small tablet computer bearing its brand in a challenge to Amazon's Kindle Fire.  The Nexus 7 is designed specifically for Google Play.  



Both tablets have screens that measure 7" diagonally, smaller than the nearly 10" on Apple New iPad. Nexus 7 will also be light,at about 0.75lb, compared with Kindle Fire's 0.9lb.

The Nexus 7 will ship in mid-July starting at US$199, the same price as Kindle Fire.  By contrast, new iPad start at US$499.  Customers can start ordering at through Google online store on Wednesday, initially in United States, Canada and Australia.

The Nexus 7 has more features than Kindle, including a front-facing camera.  Samsung sells Galaxy Tab similiar to Google's for US$250.  The Nexus 7 will run the next version of Google Inc.'s Android operating system called Jelly Bean.  There is a home entertainment device called Nexus Q which sends content from an user's personal collection or Youtube to the existing TV and speaker systems.  It is controlled through a separate Android Phone or Tablet.  Nexus Q will available in July in United States initially and sell for US$299.

Last but not least, Windows announced Windows Surface and Windows Surface Pro will available in Fall and sell for US$699 or below.  Windows Surface runs windows 8,  with a HD 10.6" screen, at about 1.49 (32/64 GB) to 1.99lbs (128GB), USB and MicroSD drives are available.  Also, Type cover is "a Highlight" which is similar as smart cover of iPad, but also works as a keyboard.
